MU (1996) For an exhibition with the title
'Reproduction' I wanted to find an object that
stressed the boundaries between the so-called
'original' and 'copy'. To investigate the notion of
reproduction. After the problematization of their
classical oppositional dichotomy by the
introduction of the assembled readymade from Marcel
Duchamp I could not evade the same issue without
rethinking both concepts. After looking for months
I found in a German warehouse two gun replicas. As
you might know: they are so well
reproduced that they can hardly be distinguished
from the original. That is also the reason why they
are forbidden in many countries. For me they
represented the construction of the discourse of
the 'real' and the 'false', the 'original' and the
'copy' and in need of a contemporary rethinking
which seems to constitute an constant in-between of
the traditional copy and the traditional
original.
